Replica: Painted alongside the original (left), historians say the copy (right) gives another insight into what the model for one of the world’s most famous paintings actually looked like

The Mona Lisa at the Prado in Madrid was thought to be just another fine copy, with added eyebrows and an odd black background.
But curators at Spain’s national art museum yesterday announced a startling discovery: the painting was actually by an artist in Leonardo da Vinci’s workshop at the same time as the original.
It is the first known copy of the most famous painting in history, and a discovery that curators believe sheds new light on the creation of the masterpiece.
Deputy conservator Gabriele Finaldi said: “It’s as if we were standing in the workshop itself, and at the next easel. You can see that the artist was working step by step with Leonardo. When Leonardo made a change, he made a change.” Read more HERE
A ‘Mona Lisa’ copy owned by Spain’s Prado Museum was almost certainly painted by one of Leonardo da Vinci’s apprentices alongside the master himself as he did the original, says museum officials.

Lately I been streaming different movies & documentaries on Netflix; watching while making art. The best one I came across this week was Werner Herzog’s “Cave Of Forgotten Dreams”. A documentary about France’s Chauvet Cave, which contains the oldest human-painted images found on Earth.
What caught me… The cave drawings have been dated back to as early as 32,000 years ago. On some walls there are layered drawings of animals. Carbon dating on a particular cave wall with overlapping images, showed that a top layer of animals was drawn 5,000 years after the (original) bottom layer.
Some other documentaries from the week…
“Waste Land”, 2010 – Vik Muniz works with the “Pickers” of Brazil to create large scale works of art from materials found in the dump.
“I Think We’re Alone Now” – A documentary about a hermaphrodite and a dude with asburgers who are obsessed with 80′s pop singer Tiffany.
Aside from the above scores, I recently watched Bling ( a documentary about the diamond conflict in Africa), Rocky IV, Into The Universe With Stephen Hawkins, Leprechaun 5: In The Hood (so bad it’s good), More American Graffiti, and The Secret To My Success.
